Resistance training, commonly known as strength training, offers a wide range of physiological advantages. According to recent findings published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, dedicating 90 to 120 minutes each week to these activities could potentially add years to your life.


The research revealed that individuals who engaged in moderate strength training within this timeframe saw a 13% reduction in the risk of all-cause premature death. Furthermore, these participants experienced a 19% lower risk of cardiovascular-related mortality and a 27% decrease in risk for neurological diseases compared to those who avoided resistance training entirely. Notably, the health benefits appeared to plateau after reaching the 120-minute mark per week.


«Although the lowest risk of an early death was associated with the 90- to 120-minute range, a decreased risk was seen even at relatively small amounts of resistance training from zero to 30 minutes, 30 to 60 and 60 to 90 minutes,» notes lead author Yiwen Zhang, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Complementary Benefits of Exercise

The study highlights that combining strength training with aerobic activity provides a synergistic effect. While cardio improves heart health and blood pressure, resistance training works through different pathways. By forcing muscles to work against resistance, these movements create micro-tears in fibers, which subsequently repair and strengthen during rest periods. This process is essential for maintaining physical function, metabolic health, and even mental well-being as individuals age.


Study Methodology and Key Discoveries

The Harvard research team analyzed data spanning 30 years from over 147,000 individuals across three major studies. Participants were regularly surveyed regarding their exercise habits, with the team documenting over 35,000 deaths during the follow-up period. The data showed that those who performed a combination of strength and aerobic exercises—such as swimming, cycling, or running—achieved the most significant reductions in mortality risk, reaching up to 45% lower compared to sedentary individuals.


Interestingly, while the study showed a correlation between resistance training and lower neurological disease mortality, researchers emphasize that this is an observational study. Because neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s can manifest years before a formal diagnosis, they advise that further research is required to fully understand these specific biological mechanisms.


Getting Started with Strength Training

You do not need a high-end gym to begin a strength regimen. Experts suggest that accessible options like bodyweight exercises (squats, push-ups, lunges), resistance bands, or even light household objects can be highly effective. The key is to start at a sustainable, manageable level.
